Real Business Beginnings 02: Built to Last
Marcy McKenna has been in the outdoor and active lifestyle industry long enough to watch multiple waves come and go. Her company, Brand Vantage Marketing, has survived them all — not by chasing each wave but by knowing which ones to ride and which ones to let pass.
The Interview
Karissa | NMBS: You've built a business in an industry that's constantly shifting. How do you maintain consistency through that?
Marcy: You have to be clear on what you're actually selling. I'm not selling a trend or a moment. I'm selling expertise, relationships, and results. Those things don't expire. What shifts is the landscape around them — the channels, the platforms, the formats. But the foundation stays the same if you built it on something real.
Karissa | NMBS: What did it take to build Brand Vantage in the early years?
Marcy: It took a lot of relationship building before there was anything to show for it. In agencies, trust is everything. Brands aren't going to hand you their marketing unless they believe you understand their space and their customers. So I spent years building that understanding and those relationships. The business came from that — not from pitching, from earning.
Karissa | NMBS: How do you think about longevity when you're running a service business?
Marcy: You think about it in terms of reputation. What do people say about you when you're not in the room? Do they say you delivered? Do they say you were honest when things were hard? Do they say they'd work with you again? That's the scoreboard that matters. Revenue follows reputation, not the other way around.
Karissa | NMBS: What would you tell someone starting an agency today?
Marcy: Get niche. Go deep in one space and become indispensable there. The generalist route is harder now than it's ever been. If you can say "I know this industry cold and I have the relationships to prove it," you are worth something specific to someone specific. That's a much better position than trying to be everything to everyone.
Karissa | NMBS: What does built to last actually mean in practice?
Marcy: It means making decisions that your future self will respect. It means not sacrificing reputation for a short-term win. It means building systems that work when you're not there. And it means staying current — learning constantly — so you're not left behind while you're trying to stick to the fundamentals. It's both. You need both.
Brand Vantage Marketing is what built-to-last looks like when the builder knows the difference between what changes and what doesn't. Marcy built on the things that don't change. That's why she's still here.
