Work With Me, One on One

I'm not a coach. I'm not a therapist. I don't give advice, because you don't need advice. You already know your answers. You need better questions, and someone who won't let you off the hook while you answer them.

This isn't a substitute for therapy, and it doesn't try to be. Therapy is where you understand it. This is where you decide it, and then actually do something about it.

Who I am

Karissa Genovese laughing on the beach

I'm Karissa. It started with one question I'd been avoiding for years: if I could change one thing about my body, what would it be? My hearing, instantly. I was born with hearing loss and didn't get hearing aids until my thirties. One honest answer, and then I couldn't stop wondering what else I'd been avoiding. That's the whole idea behind No More Bullsh*t: the right question at the right time. Since then, through heartbreaks, career pivots, and moving across the world, journaling stopped being a ritual and became how I figure things out. It began with questions I'd send to my closest friends, because some things are easier to face when you don't feel like you're doing it alone. Those questions turned into a journal series, dozens of reckonings, and in-person journaling sessions I run in bookstores, cafes, and on beaches. Every week I write the stories behind the questions. One on one is the same work, just the two of us, built around exactly what you're going through.

Before all this, I spent two decades in finance and tech. I managed multibillion-dollar retirement funds. I managed people, hired and let people go, ran trainings on how to make it safe to tell the truth at work, and led women-in-tech programs at the New York Times. Sitting across from someone and asking the question that finally moves them was never in the job description. It's the job I kept doing inside every other job.

I've started businesses of my own, built them up and had to close them down. Real wins, hard failures, and I learned the most from the failures. Somewhere in there I realized the part I loved was never the money or the data. It was the people underneath. What lit them up, what drove them, what they were actually working for. And none of it was ever separate from what I was sorting out in my own life. I won't ask you anything I haven't had to answer myself.

Why I made this

What you might be circling

I don't know what I actually want. That's the problem.

I can't tell anymore if I'm burned out or just bored.

The job ended, and I don't know what's next.

Everyone thinks the business is going great. I'm not sure I want it anymore.

There's a number in my head that was supposed to be the finish line. I keep moving it.

I know exactly where this pattern comes from. Knowing hasn't stopped it.

I've spent years on things that calm me down. The question is still there.

I keep looking up apartments in another city and closing the tab.

Someone I love and I haven't really talked in months.

I spent years being the person everyone else needed. Now everyone's asking what's next, like I should already know.

I know what I need to do. I keep finding reasons not to.

I already know what I'm going to do. I just haven't said it out loud yet.

How we work together

Everyone starts with the first one. The second is where it goes deeper, if you want to keep going.

What do I actually want?

This is the way in, and it's where everyone starts. Six sessions over three months. We walk back through your story, the jobs you took, the turns you made, what you kept reaching for and what you kept avoiding. The thread running through all of it is usually the thing you actually want, and most people have never stopped to trace it.

By the end you can name it, and the two or three areas standing in the way. Relationships. Family. Work. Whatever yours turn out to be. That clarity is the part almost nobody reaches on their own, and it's the whole reason the deeper work is even possible.

I will not tell you what you want. I can't. Nobody can. My job is to keep asking until you hear yourself say it.

After the six sessions · three months each

One focus at a time

Finding what you want doesn't change your life. Deciding what to do about it does, and that's what I specialize in. So we take one thing, an area of your life or a decision you're facing, and work it until you've decided and you move. Your work or your business, money, the person you're with, the family you came from, a friendship, your body. Whatever you keep circling. We go through the boundaries and the values underneath it, three months on that one thing.

This isn't about understanding why the pattern is there. It's about deciding what you're going to do differently, and actually doing it. We meet an hour every other week. You don't leave with a vague intention. You leave having named the one thing you're going to do before we talk again, in your words, with a date on it, and the next call opens there: did you do it, and if you didn't, what got in the way. In between, I point you to the one book or article worth your time on what we're working through.

The decision is always yours. I don't make it for you, and I'm not steering you anywhere. My job is to get you there clear-eyed, and then not let you sit on it.

One thing, decided and acted on, then the next.

What actually happens: we get on video and I ask you the thing you've been stepping around. You talk, I keep asking, and I don't let you stop at the easy answer. You leave each session with one thing to sit with. By the end, you can say what you want out loud without flinching.

Here's one of the questions, straight from Before You Decide: Whose disappointment are you already designing around? Now imagine answering that out loud, across from someone, instead of alone on a page.

The format

Everything is over video, wherever you are, whatever your timezone. The reckoning or journal we work from is included, and we sort out on the free call which one fits.

Questions I get

Will you tell me what to do?
No. I can't, and I wouldn't trust anyone who says they can. I ask, you answer, and the decision stays yours the whole way through.

I'm already in therapy. Can I do this too?
Yes, and they don't compete. Therapy is where you understand it. This is where you decide what to do about it. Plenty of people do both.

What happens on the free call?
Twenty minutes on video. You tell me what you're circling, I ask a few questions, and we both find out if this is a fit. It goes both ways, and you don't have to decide anything on the call.

What if I can't even name what I'm circling?
Then you're exactly who the six sessions are for. Naming it is the work, not the entry requirement. Come as foggy as you are.

Do I have to prepare anything between sessions?
You live with the questions, that's it. There's no homework to hand in and nobody grading you. When we meet, we work through whatever came up.

Do I need to be a journaling person?
No. The journal and the reckonings are the structure we work from, but I bring the questions and I keep us moving. You just have to be willing to answer honestly.

Where to start

Book a free 20-minute video call. It goes both ways: it's how I understand what you're actually working through, and how you find out whether I'm the right person to work through it with. I only take this on when it's genuinely a fit, so the call is a real fit check, not a sales call. Come with the thing you're circling, even if you can't name it yet. Either way, you'll leave with a better question than you came with, and you can decide on the call or take a week.

Prefer to write? Email unfiltered@nomorebsjournal.com, plenty of people start there. Tell me what you're circling, and if you can't name it yet, tell me which line up there is yours.

Not ready to book? Start with the questions.

You don't have to talk to me to begin. A reckoning is the same method, on your own, and the fastest way to feel how I actually think. Not sure where to start? Are You Burned Out or Just Bored? is free, and Before You Decide is the one for a fork you can't get past. If you hit the question you can't answer alone, you'll know where I am.

Start with a free reckoning

Prefer people in the room? I run in-person journaling sessions too, with remote ones in the works.

This is for thinking clearly, not for crisis. If you're really struggling to cope right now, please reach a doctor or a crisis line where you are, first.
